«Watch out, the world’s behind you»

«Watch out, the world’s behind you«

My favourite song lyric ever, from the utterly sublime track ‘Sunday Morning,’ which opens ‘The Velvet Underground and Nico’. Little needs to be said about the record and the group and their music: groundbreaking, unique, revoulutionary, inspired and awe-inspiring, poetic, melodic…and occasionally quite noisy. Probably the greatest thing that can be said about them is that they were the band that inspired thousands of other bands towards their own creativity and originality, rather than a band that inspired thousands of imitations.

watch out‘ means: be alert, vigilant, cautious or on guard

the world’s behind you‘ means exactly that.

I think that everything else goes without saying.*.

«Sunday morning, brings the dawning
It’s just a restless feeling by my side
Early dawning, Sunday morning
It’s just the wasted years so close behind

Watch out, the world’s behind you
There’s always someone around you who will call
It’s nothing at all

Sunday morning and I’m falling
I’ve got a feeling I don’t want to know
Early dawning, Sunday morning
It’s all the streets you crossed, not so long ago

Watch out, the world’s behind you
There’s always someone around you who will call
It’s nothing at all

Watch out, the world’s behind you
There’s always someone around you who will call
It’s nothing at all

Sunday morning
Sunday morning
Sunday morning
Sunday morning»

*It goes without saying that ‘it goes without saying’ is a useful way to say that something is obvious and doesn’t need to be said.
